Seattle’s Starbucks Reserve Roastery has one of the most unique coffee tasting experiences I have ever had. Step right up to their Starbucks Experience Bar and order yourself a siphoned coffee tasting with their specialty Starbucks Reserve coffee beans – then hold on because you are in for a treat!
After thumbing through the Starbucks Experience Bar menu, we decided to try three different Starbucks Reserve coffee varieties. There were quite a few origins to choose from but we settled on Reserve beans from Kenya, Brazil, and Columbia. After placing our order, our barista started setting up the coffee siphons right in front of us at the bar! While watching our coffee brew, we felt like we were part of an Alton Brown culinary experiment and were absolutely mesmerized.

Starting from the lightest Kenyan brew to the boldest Colombian roast, we finished each cup of coffee before moving on to the next cup. The Kenya Barichu had a clean and light sip with citrus flavors, while the Sun-Dried Brazil Vale Verde Estate touted a deeper, sweet molasses flavor. My favorite was the final Colombia Matambo Woods coffee, which had a deep brown sugar richness.
Starting the siphoned coffee experience, we first tried each coffee black, focusing on each flavor nuance. I then added a splash of milk to the coffee (my usual coffee addition) and I felt like it helped the flavors come alive! We also appreciated having a sparkling water accompany our siphoned coffee flight because it was a great pallet cleanser between sips.
How a Coffee Siphon Works
Also known as a vacuum coffee maker, a coffee siphon works by heating ground coffee and water together in a chamber that gets force filtered through heat induced vapor pressure.
STEP 1: Pressure is created through a heat source causing water to slowly come to a boil. When the water begins to boil, the water is forced to travel from the lower water chamber into the top chamber where it mixes with ground coffee beans.
STEP 2: After the coffee grounds and water have boiled and steeped for about 5-8 minutes (kind of like a french press) the water in the top chamber then looses its pressure, forcing the water to come back down to the bottom chamber.
STEP 3: On its way down, the water and ground coffee beans get forced through a middle chamber filter, separating the beans from the water and creating one epic cup of coffee.
While the Starbucks Reserve Roastery is hardly a Seattle secret, their Starbucks siphon experience is one of the most unique coffee tastings I’ve ever had! I’ve tried siphoned tea before but getting to taste three different siphoned coffees in their chique copper roasting room was absolutely magical. We were lucky to be there on a Friday afternoon in February, so it was not too busy but they said this location is usually packed on the weekends and during the summer. If you are in the area, you must stop by and hopefully you will have the same Starbucks siphon experience we did!
