I have a thing for produce stands. I am obsessed with walking down the isles of farmers markets weaving between fruit vendors, checking out the local favorites and taste testing new treats. While road tripping through New Mexico after the Hot Air Balloon Festival, in literally the middle of nowhere, we unintentionally stumbled upon the ultimate New Mexico local market.
The Snake Ranch Farm Store was located in a little tiny town on a two-lane road, sandwiched between abandoned buildings and small homes. We entered the dimly lit stand-alone shop looking for some road trip snacks and quickly realized that we had found the Mecca of New Mexico produce.
The store was overflowing with local produce, from gourds to onions and apples! You essentially have everything you could ever need in this store, from dried, fresh, and canning vegetables to spices and snacks. For such a small store thriving on seasonal produce, they essentially have it all and then some.
One of the most impressive things about the Snake Ranch Farm Store was that the market was full of chillies! Chillies are one of the most popular and iconic crops of New Mexico and these chillies were fresh, vibrant, and perfectly labeled for their spice intensity. Gorgeous bundles of chillies were even hanging from the ceiling, draping like decoration from almost all corners of the room.
On our way out, we grabbed some spicy pistachios for the road. They were perfectly coated in the New Mexico chili powder, a suitable snack to munch on while driving through the desert landscape. I am so happy we stopped at this little gem of a store, proving that even in the middle of nowhere, you can have fresh, local produce!
